Maurice Town History

Town History

Maurice, Louisiana was founded in 1870 by Maurice Villien, a native of Savoie, France. The town was originally called “Villien’s Bluff”, but was renamed Maurice in 1880. Maurice was incorporated in 1911.

The early history of Maurice was shaped by its location along the Gulf Coast. The town was a major trading post for Native Americans, and later for French and Spanish settlers. In the early 19th century, Maurice became a popular destination for Acadians who were fleeing persecution in Canada.

The economy of Maurice was based on agriculture. The town was home to several plantations, and the surrounding area was known for its fertile soil and abundant wildlife.

Today, Maurice is a thriving town with a rich history and vibrant culture. The town is home to several restaurants, Hebert’s Specialty Meat Market, antiques, designer egg purses and other one-of-a-kind creations of Vivian Alexander and City Bar, “a world famous” watering hole.

Maurice is also home to several historical sites, including the Maurice Cemetery, the Maurice Fire Department, and the Maurice Town Hall. The Maurice Cemetery is the final resting place of many of the town’s early settlers. The Maurice Fire Department was founded in 1967 and is one of the oldest continuously operating fire department in Vermilion Parish. The Maurice Town Hall was built in 1938 and is the seat of local government.
